Mexico ended daylight saving time nationwide in October 2022, so most of the country now stays on Central Standard Time (UTC-6) all year. Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit and Baja California Sur use Mountain time (UTC-7), Baja California uses Pacific time (UTC-8) and still changes its clocks with the United States, and Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula keeps UTC-5 for tourism.
Along the northern border a strip of municipalities, including Ciudad Juarez, Ojinaga, Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa and Matamoros, continues to observe daylight saving to stay in step with the US cities across the river. Zoom in on the border to see those pockets drawn exactly.
How many time zones are there? 38 different UTC offsets are in use today, from UTC-12 to UTC+14, but the IANA database tracks hundreds of named zones because regions with the same offset often follow different daylight saving rules. This map draws a border only where the clocks actually differ right now.
Where does the border data come from? The open timezone-boundary-builder project, which combines OpenStreetMap boundaries with the IANA time zone database. The map is rebuilt with every release.
