Africa uses four main offsets: UTC+0 in West Africa from Senegal to Ghana, West Africa Time (UTC+1) in Nigeria, Algeria and Tunisia, Central Africa Time (UTC+2) in South Africa, Egypt and the south, and East Africa Time (UTC+3) in Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and the Horn. Morocco keeps UTC+1 for most of the year and drops to UTC+0 during Ramadan, and Egypt reintroduced daylight saving in 2023.
Many borders here follow rivers and old colonial lines. Zoom in on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which spans two zones, or on the Ghana and Togo border, where the clocks jump an hour along a straight line drawn in 1919.
How many time zones are there? 38 different UTC offsets are in use today, from UTC-12 to UTC+14, but the IANA database tracks hundreds of named zones because regions with the same offset often follow different daylight saving rules. This map draws a border only where the clocks actually differ right now.
Where does the border data come from? The open timezone-boundary-builder project, which combines OpenStreetMap boundaries with the IANA time zone database. The map is rebuilt with every release.
