Australia has three standard zones: Western (UTC+8), Central (UTC+9:30) and Eastern (UTC+10). New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT and South Australia move their clocks forward from October to April, while Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia do not, so in summer the country has five different local times.
Zoom in on the Queensland and New South Wales border at the Gold Coast, where the time changes in the middle of a town for half the year, or on Eucla in Western Australia and Broken Hill in New South Wales, both of which keep their own unofficial times.
How many time zones are there? 38 different UTC offsets are in use today, from UTC-12 to UTC+14, but the IANA database tracks hundreds of named zones because regions with the same offset often follow different daylight saving rules. This map draws a border only where the clocks actually differ right now.
Where does the border data come from? The open timezone-boundary-builder project, which combines OpenStreetMap boundaries with the IANA time zone database. The map is rebuilt with every release.
